The Birth of Catskills Trout Tales!

We are thrilled to announce that Catskills Trout Tales is coming to life!

Buoyed by their success of Trout Tales as a single day event with a growing collection of partners and participants in 2017, and dreaming of a regional way to invite people to discover the magic of the Catskills in the spring through fly-fishing, the folks at Spillian reached out to the community about a crazy idea last summer.

They wondered…

What if we imagined the Catskills as the epicenter of all things trout? What if we invited visitors to come and fall in love with the quiet beauty of spring in these mountains, learning about the poetry and the adventure in fly-fishing, unfolding this special place as not just a destination but a place to care for and steward?

What if we asked other lodging partners, restaurants, retailers, environmental organizations, community foundations, tourism agencies, artists and arts organizations, along with fishing guides and experts to join with us in reminding the world that the Catskills is the birthplace of American fly-fishing? A place where people have been coming for over a hundred years to find the zen of fishing?

What if we connected a whole season’s worth of special events and offerings to share how fly-fishing can become a way into savoring the streams and forests of the Catskills – for beginners to experienced anglers – ensuring that there was something for everyone who came to visit?

And we began to ask. And got a whole lot of resounding heck, yeahs.

So we reached out for support, and received funding from the new Delaware County Tourism Funds program, and from the O’Connor Foundation, with help from the MARK Project. And we received pledges from a number of leading local businesses and organizations, our Catskills Trout Tales Founding Partners. We’ve also asked the state for some additional funding support from the Market NY program…cross your fingers, as this will allow us to reach out to a much broader audience!

So together, this grassroots group of people and organizations are building a web of world-class programs, experiences, and offers for you to discover the Catskills in the spring. We’ll have expo’s, classes, guided trips, lodging, amazing meals and specialty cocktails featuring local spirits, art exhibitions, workshops, adventures, explorations, and, of course, stories. Because what are anglers but story tellers? It’s all about the tale…

Won’t you join us? Check out our growing calendar of events, our amazing partners, special opportunities to stay and play in the woods, some cool stuff like our Trout Bucks and Trout Tales Passports, and think spring!
