Author and women’s empowerment leader Gail Straub will read from her new book, THE ASHOKAN WAY (Homebound, March 2018), which chronicles a year’s worth of walks near the Ashokan Reservoir, at the Catskill Interpretive Center on Thursday, April 26 at 6:30 pm. For the past 35 years, Straub has walked the Catskill Mountain Watershed almost daily, and grown to rely on the wild as a portal to self-understanding and spiritual restoration. The book is at once a lyrical form of devotion, a vital addition to the male-dominated catalog of nature writing, and a powerful call to recognize wilderness and unadulterated open space as key to our humanity, especially in divisive and tech-addled times like today.

About the Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center

“For too long the Catskill State Park was one of the only major state or national parks in the country without an Interpretive Center. I was determined to change that. It’s critically important to have a place where residents and visitors can learn about our unique natural, historical, and cultural resources. It will help preserve our rich heritage, keep our local economies strong, and our quality of life intact.” — Hon. Rep. Maurice D. Hinchey, US Rep. 1993 – 2013

The Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center is a partnership between the Catskill Center and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Our staff and volunteers are on hand to welcome visitors to the Catskills, provide information and help you plan your Catskill adventure!
